On January 26 1979, only four weeks after their formation, Bauhaus 1919 booked themselves into Beck, a small local recording studio on Gisburne Road, Wellingborough, just outside Northampton, to record almost their entire original repertoire. Derek Tompkins established the studio in 1969 and, although now equipped with digital recording equipment, it still boasts and uses an analogue mixing desk. Tompkins himself engineered this very first Bauhaus 1919 recording session, a five track demo featuring Some Faces, Bite My Hip, Harry, Boys and a brand new number entitled Bela Lugosi’s Dead.

As with their previous incarnations, Bauhaus 1919 played largely original material with the occasional cover, such as the T. Rex classic Telegram Sam, thrown in for good measure.

A month after their first recording session three new songs (In The Night, Kamikaze Dive and Dark Entries) were added to the live set. Along with later additions (A God In An Alcove, Nerves and Honeymoon Croon) these were recorded for the first time during mid-1979. Although technically studio recordings, they were performed live, in one take with no overdubs, after completing their official recording duties – a re-recording of Boys for Small Wonder Records. This complete session was captured for prosperity and released by Nemo / Beggars Banquet in 1997 as Live In The Studio 1979 as part of the book Beneath The Mask.

It’s a fascinating glimpse of Bauhaus six months before they released their debut 4AD single, ‘Dark Entries’, performing embryonic versions of songs that would appear throughout their short career.

A surplus box of these discs was recently discovered in our storehaus. Unavailable for over 10 years, these rare CD’s are now being offered exclusively through the Archive site on a first-come basis – once we sell out, they’re gone forever.
